About Uma Vista
“Cássio Vasconcellos’s 2002 Uma vista (A Perspective) also portrays the city, but as a sum of discrete fragments. Like in an enormous shifting, black-and-white kaleidoscope, the work’s Sixty-seven individual photographs gain unity only when seen from one vantage point and with a fixed gaze. For this monumental installation, Vasconcellos deconstructed a single photograph of the urban landscape and rebuilt it using principles of perspective appropriated from landscape painting. This banal image of elevated urban subway tracks itself has links to documentary photography traditions, but its fragmented installation lends viewers Creative agency in making its constituent parts coalesce into a bigger picture.”
